Therapeutic Education and Approach to Learning
At Hatfield Wick, therapeutic education is woven into everything we do. We know that young people learn best when they feel safe, understood and valued. By building trusting relationships and creating a sense of belonging, we help pupils develop the confidence, resilience and skills they need to engage with learning and reach their potential.
For many of our young students, learning cannot happen until they feel emotionally safe. Our specialist team works alongside each young person to understand their experiences, reduce barriers to learning and support them to develop positive ways of coping, growing and succeeding both in school and beyond.
What is therapeutic learning?
Therapeutic education recognises that every behaviour has a reason behind it. Rather than focusing solely on academic progress, it considers the whole child, supporting their emotional wellbeing alongside their learning. This creates an environment where young people feel safe enough to take risks, build relationships and reconnect with education.
Through small class sizes, strong relationships and high levels of support, we are able to get to know each young person as an individual. Many of the young people we work with have experienced challenges that have affected their trust, confidence or ability to engage in school. Our approach focuses on understanding these experiences and providing the support needed for them to feel successful, both academically and emotionally.
What guides our work every day
Our work is guided by a clear set of values that shape daily interactions, expectations, and decision‑making across the school.
The CARES360® framework is how these values are translated into consistent, reliable practice for students and families.
Our values
Compassion
We understand behaviour as communication and respond with curiosity, care, and proportion.
Autonomy
We support students to develop independence, agency, and confidence — not learned compliance.
Respect
We value difference, dignity, and individuality in students, families, and staff.
Empathy
We seek to understand experiences before making judgements or decisions.
Support
We provide consistent, proactive support to help students overcome barriers and succeed.
Values in practice
Adults regulate first before responding to behaviour
Expectations are clear, fair, and consistently applied
Emotional literacy and self‑regulation are taught explicitly
Relationships are prioritised and repaired when difficulties arise
Families are treated as partners
Emotional and social development
Our approach is designed to help students better understand themselves, manage their emotions and build positive, trusting relationships. Through a blend of consistent mentoring, therapeutic practices and carefully structured activities, we provide safe, supportive spaces where students feel able to express themselves and grow.
Rooted in our CARES framework and aligned with recognised wellbeing principles, this integrated approach enables students to develop resilience, strengthen emotional regulation, and engage more confidently with both learning and life.
