Specialist education subject information
Our specialist curriculum is built around a highly personalised, person-centred approach that combines therapeutic interventions with a rich and engaging academic experience. Designed to meet the needs of learners within a specialist and alternative provision setting, the curriculum supports both educational achievement and personal development through adaptable teaching and targeted intervention.
At the heart of our specialist school curriculum are therapeutic interventions alongside dedicated Personal, Social, Health, Citizenship and Economic Education (PSHCE) and Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development. These core elements help pupils build confidence, resilience, emotional well-being, and the life skills needed to succeed both in school and beyond.
Our broad and balanced curriculum ensures that all pupils access a wide range of subject areas, including linguistic, mathematical, scientific, technological, human and social, physical, aesthetic and creative education. Through this specialist curriculum approach, pupils are encouraged to develop curiosity, independence and a positive relationship with learning.
The curriculum includes English, mathematics, science, computing, PSHCE (including Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE)), history, geography, art and design, physical education and Religious Education (RE), subject to consultation with parents. Across Key Stages 2 and 3, subjects are taught discretely and sequentially to ensure progression in knowledge and skills, while thematic and connected learning opportunities are used where appropriate to deepen understanding and engagement.
At Key Stage 4, the curriculum becomes more focused and streamlined to support pupils in achieving success in accredited pathways and qualifications. Humanities and art and design are no longer taught as standalone subjects, enabling greater emphasis on core academic learning and assessment preparation. However, elements of these subjects continue to be explored through cross-curricular and thematic learning experiences where appropriate.
Our overarching aim is to provide high-quality learning opportunities through an engaging, adaptable and specialist curriculum that enables every pupil to make meaningful progress from their individual starting point.
Our qualification offer is subject to change, dependent on our cohorts, their interests, passions, desires and aspirations for their future.
Example long term overviews of our offer within Lower Key Stage 2, Upper Key Stage 2, Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 are available to view on the website.
